Two large buildings of exhibits cover the history of Camp Roberts, from its construction in 1941 through recent mobilizations for Iraqi Freedom, and military vehicles from WWII to the present. Enter at the main gate off Highway 101 and have your diriver's license (or other identification), vehicle registration and proof of insurance .
Founded on July 25, 1797 by Father Fermin Lasuen, Presidente of the California Mission chain, and named for Saint Michael the Arcangel, it was the 16th mission founded in the 21-mission chain in Alta California. The mission suffered extensive earthquake damage in December 2003, forcing closure of the church. However, the gift shop and a small church area for masses are open and the mission can be viewed from the parking lot.
The Rios-Caledonia Adobe, a century-old inn and stage stop on the old mission trail between San Francisco and San Diego, is located on grounds that once belonged to Mission San Miguel and is now part of the San Luis Obispo Parks Department. The "Friends of the Adobe" provides members the opportunity to support and keep in touch with history of the area. The Adobe is California Historical Landmark #936.
The Estrella Warbird Museum name memorializes the WWII Estrella Army airfield that is now the Paso Robles Municipal Airport. Chartered in 1995, the museum is one of the few "fly-in or drive-in" facilities in the nation and contains an extensive collection of U.S. military aircraft from WWII through Desert Storm and Iraq as well as military vehicles, tanks, and memorabilia from WWII onward. Its primary goal is to preserve, perpetuate and display American aviation history, especially that of our men and women in our nation's military service. The museum is dedicated to those men and women who preserved freedom for all.
The Paso Robles PioneerMuseum is a wonderful collection of visual and written history. Included are artifacts from early Indian settlements, vintage farm and ranching equipment, a barbed-wire collection, antique vehicles, clothing, toys, a Paderewski (famous pianist) display and hundreds of items from pioneer homes and businesses. A one-room schoolhouse, built in 1886 and restored by museum volunteers, typical of the many that dotted the countryside in Northern San Luis Obispo County, is a real treat.
The Paso Robles Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that seeks and encourages the development of archives and serves as a repository for records and other materials. The Paso Robles Historical Society has temporarily relocated on the Pioneer Museum grounds after the historic Carnegie Library in the downtown city park received extensive damage from a major earthquake in 2003.
The Templeton Historical Museum Society was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1989, the realization of a dream of nearly 25 years earlier.
The Horstman house, built by Albert Horstman, a prominent Templeton businessman in the 1920s, was donated to the society in 1994 and serves as the
museum where local memorabilia and photographs are displayed. Templeton's original railroad warehouse (behind the house)
contains a 1925 Model T in original condition, an antique carriage and other items too large to put into the house.
Chartered in 1965, the society maintained a museum for over 30 years in the Atascadero City Administration Building's lower rotunda until the 2003 earthquake forced its closure. Since the earthquake, the society has kept its 1919 Colony House open. The house, restored and surrounded by a unique demonstration garden and the Hattie Prather Rose Garden, is located off East Mall next to the parking lot of the historic city hall.
The Guthrie-Bianchini House is one of the oldest houses in Cambria. After being empty for thirty years, the house was purchased by The Cambria Historical Society in 2001. When it is restored to its former glory, it will house the Cambria Historical Museum. This picture, taken in 2004, shows the house after it was lifted up about eight feet so a new foundation could be built under it.
The vision of the Santa Margarita Historical Society is to make our local history available on-line with hardcopy held at our public library located on the corner of I & Murphy Streets in Santa Margarita. Plans call for restoration of the small county jail building and documenting a number of the community's historic buildings, both those that are still standing and those that have disappeared over the decades. The Society is recording the stories of "old timers" to help ensure that the history of the town, which grew out of the Mexican Land Grant Rancho Santa Margarita, is not lost.
